The non-toxic paint is applied carefully to the thorax of the queen to signify the year she was produced.  Follow the accepted guide to identify the year;  years ending in: 0 or 5 - Blue, 1 or 6 - White, 2 or 7 - Yellow, 3 or 8 - Red, and 4 or 9 - Green.
